Mexico and USA Clash on Banderas Bay
Author: Joe Lacey

Elite sailing teams from Mexico and the USA will challenge each other on Wednesday, March 5th aboard two of the America’s Cup Race Boats brought here by Vallarta Adventures. The local boys have something to prove to the visiting Norte Americanos and hope that their local knowledge can give them an advantage on the seasoned sailors arriving from California. The contest will be one of many events scheduled during Vallarta Race Week, hosted by the Vallarta Yacht Club and the public is welcome to watch and participate during the entire event.

The Vallarta Race Week is a culmination of the Vallarta Race, from San Diego to Banderas Bay, the Govenor’s Cup race, the inaugural event of the MEXORC Regatta, and our very own Banderas Bay Regatta, featuring the Classy Cruisers who invade the Bay each winter and others that call this place “Home”.

The race week kicks off February 28th with the arrival of 20 or more race boats participating in the Vallarta Race from San Diego. This 1000 mile open ocean event will test machine and body during eight days of continuous off shore racing that terminates off of Punta de Mita at the entrance to the Bay. The racers can be tracked online by visiting www.sdyc.org/pv. A welcome reception will be held on March 1st at the Paradise Village Amphitheatre in the afternoon for these brave sailors.

On Sunday, March 2nd, a Boat Parade will be held at 10:00 AM starting at Nuevo Vallarta and will travel along the coastline to Bucerias. Grab your towel and claim a spot on the beach or call your favorite beach tavern to make reservations to watch the procession. Prizes will be awarded for the best theme decorations.

Don’t give up that ocean view table too quickly though. At 1:30 PM the same day, the Governor’s Race Cup event begins and continues through the week. This regatta will feature the top racers and boats of Mexico in a white knuckle event to kick off the MEXORC Regatta competition. Jay Ailworth, the event photographer puts it this way, “You will never see so much money, coming so close to crashing, in your entire life!” These are high stakes bragging rights. No one is going to hold back because of a threat of a little dent to a boat.

Racing continues through the week until Wednesday, March 5th when the Mexican and USA racing elite, challenge each other to a duel on the I.A.C.C. America’s Cup Race Boats brought to Banderas Bay by Vallarta Adventures. This is an even match event on neutral boats. The boats are identical, but the crews come from totally different racing backgrounds. Who will cross the finish line first? Come out and cheer for your favorite team.

The local cruisers get their chance to settle scores during the Banderas Bay Regatta. This is the 16th year of the local race and it starts Thursday, March 6th and continues through Saturday. Some racers may be looking for crew for this fun race so ask around at the marinas if you want to add “rail-meat” to your list of achievements on your resume.

Vallarta Adventures will be providing a few boats for spectators who want to see the race from the water on a space available, first come basis. The boats will pick up spectators at the Public Dock at Paradise Village Marina around noon. Contact Vallarta Adventures for pricing information. Have fun and enjoy your Vallarta Race Week!
