ABOUT US The Organization The annual Bay of Banderas Regatta takes place within the waters of the beautiful Bahía de Banderas, and its main ports of Puerto Vallarta (State of Jalisco), and its next door neighbor, Nuevo Vallarta (State of Nayarit). This sailing event is organized and run by two local nonprofit organizations: Regatas y Deportes Marítimos - Bahía de Banderas (Sección Jalisco, A.C., and Sección Nayarit, A.C., affiliated with the Mexican Sailing Federation) and the Vallarta Yacht Club. Brief History Noting that dozens of cruising sailors visited the Bay of Banderas during the winter months, local resident and sailor Gene Menzie, and other enthusiasts decided that it would be a very good idea to hold races among the "cruisers" to take advantage of the ideal weather conditions of the bay. Needless to say, the event became an immediate success and is now, without question, one of the prime sailing events for cruisers on the west coast of Mexico, not to be missed. Banderas Bay Regatta 2002 Race Headquarters In the mid 90's, the Board of
Directors decided to move its race headquarters to Paradise Village Hotel
and Marina, located in Nuevo Vallarta (just five miles north of Puerto
Vallarta). The hotel had just completed construction of an excellent marina
and other facilities that were attractive to boaters. Since then, Paradise
Village also constructed the Vallarta Yacht Club which is the official
sponsor for all On and Offshore events for Banderas Bay Regatta. Regatta Days The annual regatta usually takes place in March when the weather conditions are ideal. Winds range from 10 to 15 knots in the afternoons, and the seas are generally from 1 to 4 feet. The race course is only two miles from the channel entrance of Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit. Nonprofit All proceeds from ticket and T-shirt sales go directly to pay for the regatta activities and expenses. There is no race Entry Fee. Any surplus realized for the year is carried over to the next year to finance the next regatta's startup costs. It is interesting to note that all members of the regatta committee and board of directors of both organizations are unpaid volunteers, and work very hard to make each regatta a complete success. Community Involvement The Association and the Yacht Club encourage and support individuals and organizations actively engaged in teaching young people to sail. In each regatta, skippers are encouraged to have onboard at least one student from the local Marine Technology School located in the Port of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. In this way, it is hoped that new sailors can be developed who will come to appreciate the beauty and satisfaction of sailing. Also, the Boys Scouts troops of Puerto Vallarta and the students of the Vallarta Yacht Club's Jr. Sailing Program are invited each year to participate in the event. Fast Cats and Really Big Cats Catamarans are in the racing category that is fast becoming very popular. "Profligate", "Capricorn Cat", "Little Wing", "Humu Humu", "Mi Cohete" and "Pantera" have led the way and are encouraging similar type of boats to participate in the next Banderas Bay Regatta.
